We Bought A House!

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that we announced our home purchase!! This has been something that’s been in the works since winter and I am so excited to share the process but for now, I am just relieved that the cats out of the bag! Buying a home for the first time is overwhelming on it’s own but we are also remodeling the whole house so the hard work has only just begun for us.

Here are the details, and some of your questions from when I took a poll on Instagram Stories.

About our home:

Our home is a ranch that was built in 1961. I love the one level aspect of our home and we really bought it for the easy layout and location. We are just 10 minutes outside of downtown which was a “must have” for me. It was built in ’61 and then remodeled in ’99 so this will be the houses second renovation.

What are you renovating?

Short answer, all of it! Long answer we are starting from the left of the house (kitchen, bonus room, mud room) and working our way right to the bedrooms and bathroom. There is so much ahead of us, hah.

Why the kitchen first?

We started with the kitchen knowing it would likely be the most expensive and time consuming, but also it was the area that needed the most work. The previous remodeled kitchen was literally built on top of the original kitchen and the cabinets were very worn.

If your kitchen is down, how do you eat?

Chipotle, granola bars, our grill, cereal, coffee + fridge in our living room and a little bit of Taco Bell to tide us through.

Is your boyfriend handy?

I included this question since it’s the one I’m most sick of getting asked. No offense to Cameron, but it’s primarily me + my brother working on construction and labor since Cam has a traditional 9 to 5 at the moment. I get asked this at Home Depot all the time by total strangers and I think it’s a stark example of women in a non-traditional role getting subtly knocked down a peg. Cam is awesome, but I’m really the one with drywall on my face at the end of the day and we talk all the time about the way people make assumptions about who does what in our household. I can’t even tell you how hard I roll my eyes if someone says this to me, stranger or not.

If you’re a woman reading this, you can do way more than you think you can!! It just takes mentorship/apprenticeship and research. Teamwork makes the dream work 🙂

What all are you planning on doing to the house?

Framing, Closet rehab, re-carpeting, painting (interior and exterior), fencing, caulking, drywall, tiling, stenciling, ceiling rehab, texturing, patching, you name it haha! So those are all the DIY posts you can look forward to in the coming months.

Do you have a contractor?

Nope! We are consulting one for large scale things but for the most part the labor and development is on us. Which is equal parts overwhelming and empowering to be honest.

I’m so excited to share this process online and update y’all on our progress! More to come.
